Let the Mad Lady tell you a frightful tale. It is the tale of a business, whose owner failed to invest in marketing. This poor business was primed for success, but the customers would not come. No matter how great the business products were, they just sat on the shelf and no one would come in to buy or even look. The business began to feel as if it was doing something wrong.
Why, oh why won’t the customers come, the business cried to its’ business owner. Both were stumped. They just couldn’t figure it out. The business owner saw the success of other business and realized they were doing something he has feared for a very long time. But for the sake of his business, he decided he could no longer ignore, runaway from or deny the value of …dum…dum…dum (musical sound effects) – Marketing!
He had to be brave because if he didn’t face his fear of marketing his business would die. To this business owner and others like him, marketing seems like an untamed beast, one that will gobble up their money and produce little to no results. For some reason, there is a disconnect in their minds between effective marketing and a successful business. Although they have seen marketing in action and the remarkable results it can product for other businesses, this fear of spending money on marketing just immobilizes them makes them hide from the very thing that will make their business successful. Marketing is not some monster hiding in your closet or under your bed. Marketing is not Frankenstein’s monster nor is it out to suck your blood like Dracula. Marketing is an investment in your business. An investment, that will help your business grow and thrive.
As a business owner, does marketing make you feel like you are spinning your wheels? If so, that is when you need to take a deep breath, pause and regroup. Too often business owners embark on their “perception” of marketing without any research or professional consultation. Too often their “perception” of marketing is not the right perception for their business or their budget. Today, I am asking business owners to stop spinning your wheels! In other words, stop spending time, money and effort on marketing when you don’t know marketing.
I just keep seeing the same things over and over. It really irks me to see small business owners who can ill afford marketing, waste money doing things that either play to their vanity or expose their inexperience with marketing. It seems to me that everyone “thinks” they know marketing and yes, there are some basic marketing steps every business owner should take such as having a professional website, business cards, brochures/flyers, etc…. These things are standard operating procedure for most every business. But beyond the basics, business owners get lost and start spending money in ways that do nothing to further the growth of their business.
If you can’t afford to hire a marketing agency, then at the very least, seek professional marketing consultation. Your friends may encourage you, but if they are not marketing professionals, I would caution you on taking their advice with regards to marketing. Maybe you don’t have thousands of dollars to invest in marketing today, but if nothing else, you must invest a few hundred dollars to speak with someone who knows marketing and can give you some ideas and a direction. Once you have had a consultation, take what you’ve learned and apply it to your business. Marketing is essential to the success of your business. Learn more about marketing before you try to utilize it. The more you know, the further you will go, so - Stop spinning your wheels!
As a marketing professional, I am perplexed by the names some people give to their businesses. Many give their business a name that reflects something sentimental or personal. To you that particular name may have a special meaning, but to others it means absolutely nothing.
The name you choose can be the reason for your success or ultimate failure. If you name your business something that is hard to pronounce or has no relevance to your business, then don’t expect a marketing professional to come along with a miracle and be able to combat your poor name choice. When naming your business, think about your customer. Think about how the name relates to what you do. Think about how you are going to market your business if you give it a name that doesn’t resonate well in the minds and/or memories of your customers.
Give the name of your business deep and unbiased thought before you to the following:
If you are in the plumbing business, find a name that conveys that message, i.e. Village Plumbing or Jenkins Plumbing. To name your plumbing business Running Dog or Flower Garden makes no sense. It makes the job of marketing much easier if you don’t have to explain or educate people about the name of your business.
I spent all of last week, trying to find inspiration to write a blog post that was informative and hopefully inspiring. I struggled and just couldn’t come up with an idea that moved me and if it didn’t move me, I knew it wouldn’t move you either. But on Saturday, I was inspired. The experience I had on Saturday, reminded me of why I write about marketing. The experience I had on Saturday, inspired me to keep writing, talking, and helping people understand marketing. The experience I had on Saturday is why I call myself – Mad Lady Marketing!
On Saturday, October 5th, Team Green Leaf was invited to attend the Civic Day Convention, hosted by City of Houston Councilwoman – Helena Brown. Although the turn out was minimal, there were people in attendance, as well as other vendors. At the Green Leaf Marketing table, we had our banner with our name Green Leaf Marketing. We had marketing materials on the table for our business and marketing materials for a few of our clients – Lady A, EZ4U Online Tax Service, Simply Speech & Sweets By Belen. We also had a basket filled with green and white candy to share with those who took the time to stop and learn more about Green Leaf Marketing. I anticipated, this event being a “teaching” opportunity for our business, but what I had not anticipated was this event being a “teaching” opportunity about marketing in general. To my surprise, I actually had people come up to my table, look at the marketing materials and then proceed to ask…”So what is Green Leaf Marketing?” or “What do you do?”……really!?! Is it not self explanatory? As our name states, we do MARKETING!
It just dawn on me that this is the reason why Mad Lady Marketing was brought to life. People, hear the word marketing but they do not understand what marketing entails. Marketing is “code word”. It is something people drop from their lips because they think it makes them sound knowledgeable. It is something people toss around with as much care and understanding as they would throw liter from a car window. If you haven’t read my post, entitled “You don’t know marketing!” then you should, tell a friend to read it too.
I realize now, I have a long way to go on this marketing mission. I must help people understand marketing. It is my calling, my mission, my goal.
